Fresh Movie Review: When it comes to comedy, Will Ferrell is a Jeckyl & Hyde. When he is "a" can be hilarious, but when you're outside, like a drunk in a bar shouting out loud, unfunny jokes to her friends equally inebriated. And while boys can laugh at him, are the only ones. Unfortunately, for Semi-Pro, is that Ferrell guy at the bar. This film laughs of the struggles, partly because the writing is too lazy with much of the humor that is obvious and simple Telegraph, and partly because Semi-Pro is obsessed with being a sports film rather than simply a travesty . It is true that both approaches have been made so often that it is difficult to find a new angle, but it seems more unplowed territor in the latter category than the former. However, this is not the one for the first time Kent Alterman director and screenwriter Scot Armstrong take this movie. Instead of a satire, give us a tired, boring victory by history-less, and inequality Ferrell comedy makes it less attractive. Semi-Pro has a solid job of recreating a glimpse of the pop culture of the 1970's. This may not have been the way it really was, but it is the way movies and television memories - Brashear, scandalous, and over the top. Jackie Moon (Ferrell) fits right in. He is the owner / player-coach for the Flint (michica) Tropics, a franchise of the ABA flailing with a loss of registration and an empty stadium. Word that comes down the ABA is merging with the NBA, but there is a catch: only the four best teams in the ABA will be allowed to move into the rest was dissolved. Jackie is determined to do anything and everything to ensure that the tropics move from the basement to the position # 4. His first step towards that goal is to trade in aging superstar Ed Monix (Woody Harrelson). But Monix will be a division or a unifying force? And how will his volatile relationship with residents Lynn Flint (Maura Tierney) the impact on their ability to make one last contribution? Ulimately, perhaps the biggest surprise on Semi-Pro is its focus on the sincerity more than humor. The production strives for heart at the expense of its funny bone. Even in non-comedies, you can see the jokes that are supposed to be, and there is surprisingly little evident in Semi-Pro. This film wants to be seen as a feel-good sports story, that is why the focus is shifting gradually to the fatuous Jackie more "serious" Monix. The obvious problem, of course, is that sports stories below have become so common that one to succeed, it needs an anchor with more emotional weight than Semi-Pro is capable of providing. When all is said and done, it is difficult to care about Jackie, Monix, or Black Coffee (Andre Benjamin) - are caricatures. Transplantation of these characters in a pure comedy, where it would be at home in a semi-serious hybrid, neither they nor the film works. Structually, Semi-Pro is oddly constructed, with bits and pieces thrown seemingly at random while beef up the content comedian (Lynn's boyfriend masturbating, bear attacks at random) or to provide the character development. Perhaps the most bizarre appendix is Lynn. Their presence is intended to make Monix more "real" and give him something to try to go beyond a high note, but after its introduction, it appears only in a handful of scenes. It's easy to guess that a lot of Maura Tierney of the material ended up on the cutting room floor, but what remains is so haphazard and incomplete that it is not really worth having the character of the film at all. As a comedian, Will Ferrell is at his best when working with a dash of fun. His seat of the pants improvisation often comes across more as strange that hilarious (which tends to drag out too long effective comedy material). Although director Ken Alterman achieves a degree of restraint in this regard, the script is weak and that hinders the ability of Ferrell playing someone who is stronger than drunk at the bar. Jackie Moon crosses the line from funny and annoying than ever sympathetic - simply pathetic. In general, if you are on the prowl for a Ferrell Yuk-fest, you do better to rent one of its most successful comedies to spend money in this sport false judgement. Only die-hard fans of SNL alumn everything you are worth here. Please, feel free to leave your reviews and comments about "Semi-Pro Movie" GET MOVIE NOW! |
